Enlisted Basic Training of WWIIThe Manhattan Beach Training Station in Brooklyn, New York served as a surge force boot camp from 1942-1945. Black and white recruits trained there together, which made the facility a trailblazer for future military integration. -

Commander Jack Dempsey
Former Heavyweight Boxing ChampionJack Dempsey joined the Coast Guard Reserve in 1942, where he served as the Director of Physical Education throughout World War II. In this role, Commander Dempsey also provided much-needed morale for the troops overseas, as in this exhibition match that he refereed aboard the USS Wakefield. -
